British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
